Warning about hydrogel injections from Dr. Rubinstein

"I'm a plastic surgeon in Miami and I've been doing research about how to treat the complications of hydrogel injections. I have a patient that had this done in her butt (in another country) and now has a big abnormal bump ABOVE her butt. There are papers that talk about many problems with Hydrogel. There is a reason it is NOT approved for use in this country. My treatment of choice for butt augmentation is fat transfer. You get the benefit of liposuction and then have YOUR OWN fat reinjected into your butt. Results look really good and feel natural. That is the best way to get a bigger, rounder butt. If you're too thin you may want to consider implants. I don't do implants because there is also a high rate of complications with them. When women have their breasts augmented, they often don’t even think about the overall look and balance of their body—from front to back. They may have the curves of the breasts and legs, but then suddenly realize they do not feel well balanced. The number of buttock augmentation surgeries has increased to 158% in the past three years—women want to match their bigger, boosted breasts with a just as beautiful backside, says the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

What Really Happens When You Have Butt Implant Surgery?

The implant in butt implant surgery is round—similar to a teardrop, and it is shaped like an egg, or oval. The only possible complication has to do with the incision because the implants are put systematically between the muscle’s layers. Typically with a silicon implant, the incision has the potential to open and may have to be re-sutured. In most instances this does not happen, but when it does, the patient will have to spend an extra two weeks sleeping on their stomach. The worst case is when the suture opens wide enough to where the implant is revealed, which is very painful and could cause a serious infection. If this kind of complication occurs, the implant needs be removed and remain out for a minimum of three months. Only after that amount of time can it be re-inserted.

Another technique has revolutionized the butt implant surgery arena: the use of fat grafting. Compared to implants, it is known to be safer plus it requires less downtime and surgery time. With the grafting technique, the patient is able to use their own body’s fat cells, but in turn they are also capable of having a modified liposuction. Fat is typically grafted from the hips or stomach, and gets inserted in the body through two minor incisions, layering carefully within tunnels in the butt. By using your own body’s fat cells, the body absorbs a significant amount of the fat in many cases, and a second series of incisions may need to be made to get the desired look.

Take your time finding someone you can trust, and feel comfortable with, to perform this procedure for you. Make sure it’s a highly qualified health professional with expertise in the specialty you are interested in.
